5 Essentials Every Strategy Needs

How to Spark Movement, Sustain Momentum, and Arrive with Purpose

Strategy isn’t just a plan—it’s a promise. A promise to move with clarity, to lead with courage, and to deliver impact that transforms - not just outcomes, but people. Whether you’re guiding a nonprofit, a health-focused initiative, or a for-profit board, strategy must do more than sound good on paper. It must live, breathe, and move people.

After decades of leading transformation across federal systems and mission-driven organizations, I’ve seen what makes strategy stick—and what makes it stall. Here are five essentials every strategy needs to move from vision to impact:

A Champion.

Every strategy needs someone who believes in it, fights for it, and models it. A champion isn’t just a figurehead—they’re a catalyst. They carry the strategy’s weight with credibility and warmth, making it visible and relational. Without a champion, strategy risks becoming a document instead of a movement.

A Roadmap:

Vision without a path is just aspiration. A roadmap translates strategy into sequenced, actionable steps. It shows what happens first, what follows, and how progress will be measured. But it must also leave room for discernment—strategy is iterative, not rigid.

A Backpack.

Strategy fails when it’s under-resourced. You need people, systems, and support to sustain momentum. This includes staffing, technology, funding, and relational infrastructure. If the strategy is bold, the support must be visible and felt.

A Sense of Urgency.

Without urgency, strategy stalls in comfort or confusion. Urgency fuels focus, energy, and commitment. It’s the spark that moves people from “someday” to “now.” But urgency must be grounded in clarity—not panic.

A Destination.

Strategy needs a promised land—a shared understanding of what success looks like. This isn’t just a metric; it’s a place people want to arrive. The destination should be restorative, resonant, and worth the journey.

Final Thought.

Strategy is more than structure—it’s spirit. When these five essentials are present, strategy becomes a living promise. It moves people, equips them, and brings them somewhere better.

If you’re crafting strategy for your organization, ask:

  • Who’s championing it?

  • What’s the roadmap?

  • Are the resources aligned?

  • Is there urgency?

  • And most importantly—where are we going?

Let’s build strategy that inspires impact, not just activity.
